Unique Scaffold Job @ Baldwin Auditorium in Durham, NC

Baldwin Auditorium, located at the east end of Duke University’s campus, was built in 1927. The Duke Board of trustees approved an estimated $15 million for renovations to the historic building named for historian Alice Baldwin, who was the first dean of Duke’s former Women’s College.  LeChase Construction Company brought the Associated Scaffolding Company into the project to solve a few access issues beginning in November of 2011.  The first phase included a 38’ tall stair tower and platform to allow experts to access to the lower portion of the dome to look at lighting.

In August of 2012, the real work for Associated Scaffolding began with the construction of a multitier platform measuring 60 feet in diameter under the dome, and extending up two levels inside of the dome. Associated used frame and brace scaffolding with putlogs, allowing work to continue in the space under the platform. Once this was completed, the builders went to the next phase, installing scaffolding in the attic space above the dome.  Access to the area was limited to a small cutout in the ceiling and a “tunnel” that required erectors to crawl on hands and knees to gain access to the attic.  Once inside, the “systems style” scaffolding was suspended from the structural I beams, descending down 40 feet, stopping several inches above the delicate plaster of the dome.  Since the entire ceiling and dome were also suspended, no weight could be transferred to the ceiling.  Scaffold erectors had to be mindful of where they stepped and had to take extra care not to drop any equipment or tools.  Anything falling on the ceiling or dome would have caused significant damage and could have fallen through the plaster to the platform below.  Construction of the two scaffold projects took over 6 weeks to complete using an average of 6 men daily.
