Working on a construction site is a dangerous job. When a fall occurs, having proper fall protection rescue equipment is critical. It’s important to have fall protection guidelines and equipment in place to pre-emptively avoid falls, but what happens when there is a fall? Falls may happen regardless of the steps you have put in place.

In 2015, the Bureau of Labor Statistics cited that construction-related fatalities accounted for around 21.4% of all worker fatalities. With nearly 6.5 million people working at over 250,000 construction sites across the U.S. on any given day, enforcing preventative construction site safety procedures is critical.

You need a plan for rescue and retrieval with the proper equipment before the fall occurs. At Associated Scaffolding, we have a selection of fall rescue equipment you’ll need in case a fall happens and you are faced with a rescue situation.

Potential Hazards

Some of the potential hazards that construction workers face every day include:

  • Falls from heights
  • Scaffold collapse
  • Electrocution and arc blast/flash
  • Trench collapse
  • Repetitive motion injuries
  • Failure to use the required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Suspension Trauma

Not every fall is the same and not every rescue situation is the same. Falling from a high-rise construction site will be different from falling at a second-story building. The act of falling and then hanging creates something called “Suspension Trauma.” This is a very serious condition and can occur quickly within 20-30 minutes after a fall. The symptoms include faintness, breathlessness, sweating, paleness, hot flashes, increased heart rate, nausea, dizziness, low heart rate, low blood pressure, and loss of vision.

The Need for Rescue Equipment

A fall needs to be attended to as quickly as possible to avoid further complications and even death. Without the proper fall protection rescue equipment, a fall cannot be dealt with appropriately. Things to consider when purchasing the rescue equipment that fits a construction situation include:

  • Height of structure
  • Topography of terrain
  • Space – open or confined

Depending on the specifics of the job site and potential fall, you may need equipment such as:

Associated Scaffolding has a selection of fall rescue equipment that can handle a fall at your job site. Whether it occurs from a two-story or 14-story building, with your planning and our equipment you’re prepared to deal with a fall if and when you need to.
