Falls are among the most common causes of serious work related injuries and deaths. Warning lines, also called “bump lines,” are used to mark areas where height can be a factor for potential falls. Employers must set up the work place to prevent employees from falling off of overhead platforms, elevated work stations or into holes in the floor and walls. That’s where our Warning Lines come in! We have a selection of lines, flags, and poles to accommodate any work site.

The warning line calls a worker’s attention to the fact they are approaching an unprotected edge. It is a visual reminder rather than a physical barrier, like a guardrail, that keeps a person from falling.

Factors such as weather, visibility, the slope and condition of the work surface, the work being performed, materials handled, and the experience and supervision of the workers can increase the risk of a fall, even when the barrier is at a 6-foot setback.

Rules for Temporary Demarcation

Warning lines are for temporary demarcation that serve as visual reminders, cautioning a worker that he/she is approaching an unprotected edge. OSHA requires that fall protection be provided at these elevations and situations:

  • four feet in general industry workplaces
  • five feet in shipyards
  • six feet in the construction industry
  • eight feet in longshoring operations

In addition, OSHA also requires that fall protection is provided when working over dangerous equipment and machinery, regardless of the fall distance. OSHA’s guidelines specify that an area should be marked 6 – 15’’ from a fall hazard is necessary to protect workers.

Associated Scaffolding has a Full Selection of Warning Lines
