Fall protection guardrails are an employee’s first line of fall prevention and are required by OSHA. Their guidelines contain system requirements that employers must follow to ensure guardrail systems adequately protect workers from falling to lower levels.
These guidelines state that the top edge height of top rails, or equivalent guardrail system members, must be 42 inches, plus or minus 3 inches, above the working/walking surface. The top edge height can exceed 45 inches, as long as the added height does not create a dangerous situation. Read the entirety of OSHA’s guardrail requirements at the US Department of Labor.
Note that all guardrails must be in place before work begins. Beginning a project before proper guardrails have been installed puts your workers in danger and opens you up to OSHA violations, which can devastate your business.
