Self-Retracting Lifelines are a key component to the entire fall arrest system. A self-retracting lanyard pulls out and retracts easily to allow a worker to move and change positions. Associated Scaffolding has a large selection of standard and leading edge self-retracting lifelines.
Much like a seatbelt in a car, a self-retracting lifeline rolls out and retracts as the user moves. The retracting function keeps the lifeline stretched at all times while the worker is moving around. But, when a sudden increase in speed is detected, as in a fall, the automatic speed brake activates so the fall is stopped.
Self-retracting lifelines are used when working at heights where workers have the potential of falling. Working on steel beams is an example of an environment where use of self-retracting lifelines is necessary. In this type of environment, you would use an overhead lifeline because it minimizes the fall distance by stopping the fall all but instantly. When the anchor point is directly above the wearer, the fall distance is limited and swing falls are prevented.
There are also situations where a horizontal self-retracting lifeline is the best solution. When using a self-retracting lifeline horizontally, pay close attention to sharp edges that would tear the lanyard. In that case you would need a Leading Edge retractable lanyard.
Associated Scaffolding has a full line of self-retracting lifelines to accommodate any work situation you encounter. Brands in our selection include K Strong, Guardian, Werner, and Fall Tech lifelines and lanyards in cable and web. For assistance, please call us at 1-800-768-2655.
